The last weekend of Colorado High School Activities Association regular-season hockey features a contest between the top two teams in the Foothills Conference, with both playing their best in recent weeks.
Valor Christian, ranked No. 3 in SportsEngine's most recent Colorado high school hockey rankings, wrestled the top spot away from No. 8 Regis Jesuit a couple weeks ago. Now, the Eagles will have to fend off No. 5 Chaparral, a team that's won six consecutive games.
Both squads are coming off huge wins over Regis Jesuit and No. 6 Fort Collins. Valor Christian (13-2-1, 6-2-1), which has won eight straight games, took down the Raiders in a 3-2 defeat on Feb. 8, then followed that with a 4-2 win over the Lambkins on Valentine's Day as the Eagles outshot the former No. 1 team 50-24.
Look for either Brendan Williamson or Trey Hirshfield to be in goal for the Eagles. They've combined to produce an impressive 1.12 goals-against average this season, the lowest in the CHSAA.
Chaparral's route to our Top Game of the Week on Friday involves the Warriors having taken the less traveled path. The Wolverines (13-1-3, 6-1-2) spent much of the first half of the season on the outside looking in, but since their 3-3 tie with Glenwoods Springs on Jan. 24, Chaparral has been unblemished, including in a 3-2 victory over Fort Collins on Feb. 8 and a 2-0 shutout of Regis Jesuit on Feb. 13.
Forward Jackson Mundell and goalie Joseph Holguin had standout performances for Chaparral in the triumphs, with Mundell recording the game-winning goal against the Lambkins, and Holguin totaling 29 saves against the Raiders.
Chaparral defeated Valor Christian 4-1 on Dec. 6, the first game of the season for both teams.
