5. University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves

Before joining the NCAA in 1977, the University of Alaska Anchorage's athletic teams were known as the Sourdoughs, meaning a longtime Alaskan. The university's hockey team started up in 1979 and competed at the Division II-level until the division collapsed, thrusting the program against Division I foes beginning in the mid-1980s.

The fierce Seawolf is a totemic creature derived from Native Alaskan folklore. Seawolves bring luck and fortune to anyone that spots them, or hears its howl. The University of Alaska Anchorage began using its current logo in 1985.
