Olivia Schultz grew up in New Mexico and didn’t have many opportunities when it came to playing hockey. The 18-year-old defender for Team Colorado’s 19U AAA girls’ squad began her playing career when she was about 5 years old, skating on boys’ teams because her parents weren’t initially aware of any teams offered for girls in their area. After playing on recreational hockey teams growing up, Schultz decided while in high school that hockey was something she’d like to pursue collegiately.
The recent high school graduate is taking a gap year to prepare for what she hopes will turn into an NCAA Division III hockey career. Standing nearly 6 feet tall, Schultz blends the protective nature that comes with often being the tallest girl on the ice with a natural desire to care for others.
Schultz recently spoke with the Colorado Hockey Hub about her hockey experiences, her nurturing side, and what she hopes may come next.
