The 2018 High Plains Hockey League Tier I champions Chaparral take to the ice for the first time in 2019 as they take on Cherokee Trail at Family Sports on Friday evening.
As we get into the third weekend of the 2019 High Plains Hockey League, we explore some of the top matchups of the week with many teams taking to the ice for the first time this spring. As the temperatures rise outside, we continue to keep it cool at the rinks of Colorado, with 25 High Plains games taking place throughout the state this week.
Without further ado, here are your top five HPHL games of the week:
The defending Tier I champions Chaparral return to the High Plains scene with another potent lineup for this spring, though this season they will be playing at the Tier II level. All state performers Alex Harlan (14 G, 23 A, 37 PTS stats during CHSAA) and Dylan Florit (18 G, 19 A, 37 PTS) lead Chap in their 2019 opener against a Cherokee Trail squad that finished third in Tier II last season (8-4) and are led by all state honorable mention talents Hunter Fieweger (11 G, 8A, 19 PTS) of Cherry Creek and Luke Dosen (11 G, 16 A, 27 PTS) from Regis Jesuit.
#30 Seamus Porter will help hold it down in-between the pipes for Mountain Vista Tier I during the HPHL season.
The ladies get things cooking as well this upcoming weekend, with the girls Mountain Militia and the Polar Bears taking to the ice at Family Sports on Saturday for the first time this HPHL season. Look for Militia's returning leading scorer from last season Paige Schlegal (3 G, 8 A, 11 PTS) and Aspen goaltender Sami Jaworski to lead the charge for MM as they hope to return to the HPHL girls title game in back to back seasons.
Mountain Militia Girl's goaltender Sami Jaworski make a glove save for Aspen in the Rocky Mountain District Tier II Girls Championship.
The defending HPHL Tier IV champions Rocky hockey faces off with Chaparral Tier IV at the Ice Ranch on Saturday afternoon. Look for leading returning scorer Kevin Arndt (13 G, 8 A, 21 PTS last season) and goalie Sam Simon (10-0, 1.57 GAA, .940 SV% last season) to lead Rocky, while Tallyn Wilkinson (8 G, 3 A, 11 PTS last season) will spearhead the attack for Chaparral.
Rocky Hockey attempts to repeat as High Plains Tier IV champions this season, starting this weekend with a matchup against Chaparral Tier IV.
