League organizers determined the state's reopening guidelines impacting ice rinks made it too difficult to hold games.

The High Plains Hockey League will be on hiatus this season.

HPHL organizers alerted players, parents, coaches and fans that the 2020 season was canceled with a notice posted Friday night on the league's website.

The league was set to begin an abbreviated season May 11, but that changed when it became clear that hosting practices and games would be difficult under Colorado's guidelines for reopening nonessential business, such as ice rinks.

The Gatherings section of the guidelines states no more than 10 people can assemble at one time, which makes it impossible to play a full-squad hockey game.

"While we were hopeful that we would be able to provide our high school players with a shortened season, due to Colorado’s re-opening guidelines that will impact our ice rinks we have determined it is not feasible to hold hockey games in the near future," the statement read.

The HPHL is eying a return for the 2021 season.

The league will issue refunds for registration fees, a process that could take several weeks, according to the statement. Information on how returns would be issued was also included in the statement.

Check back next week for more on this story.

Dear High Plains Hockey League Members,

We hope that you are healthy and safe during these unusual times.

We have made the very difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Spring High Plains Hockey season.  While we were hopeful that we would be able to provide our high school players with a shortened season, due to Colorado’s re-opening guidelines that will impact our ice rinks we have determined it is not feasible to hold hockey games in the near future.

We will be refunding the registration fees that were paid to HPHL during online registration.  This process will likely take a few weeks, so your patience is appreciated.  The refunds will be credited to the credit card that was used to register.  If you no longer have that card please let us know so that we can issue you a check instead.  You will need to work with your team coordinator on refunds of any fees you have paid to the team.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.  Please continue to stay safe and healthy and we look forward to seeing most of you next year!

Sincerely,

The High Plains Hockey League
