Several of Colorado's youth hockey players got their first taste of on-ice action last weekend in the Colorado Prep Hockey League Early Bird Tournament, where Monarch claimed the Tier 1 title and Cherry Cheek was crowned Tier 2 champion.
While some teams are relaxing this Labor Day weekend, others have games to play and hope the experience helps them enter the CPHL regular season in full stride.
Cherry Creek is one of the teams hitting the ice this weekend, as the Bruins have a handful of games slated as part of the ninth annual Twister Wrister tournament. The event is being held at the Ice Ranch in Littleton, where six teams will compete for the Tier 1 title while 10 teams tangle in the Tier 2 event. Each team is guaranteed four round-robin games, with 37 games on the schedule that begins on Thursday, Sept. 3. Championships are slated for Monday, Sept. 7. See the full tournament schedule below.
Regis Jesuit returns to the field this year, and the Raiders look to defend their Tier 1 championship from competition that includes teams from Castle View, Parker-Chaparral, Fort Collins, Valor Christian and Monument Hockey Academy.
Valor Christian won the Tier 2 title a year ago, and this year the Eagles will be challenged by teams from Castle View, Fort Collins, Cherry Creek, West Elk, Glenwood Springs, Regis Jesuit, Columbine, Chatfield/Foothills and Parker-Chaparral.
The event is sanctioned by USA Hockey, and no spectators will be allowed in the arena.
