The start of the 2021 Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) ice hockey season is going to have to wait a little longer. The new season has been pushed back, with team practices now proposed to start on Jan. 25 instead of Jan. 4, with games beginning Feb. 1 instead of Jan. 7.
The move was announced by CHSAA organizers earlier this week following talks with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, as COVID-19 infection rates continue increasing across the state and country.
Ice hockey, part of the association’s B season this school year — along with basketball, wrestling, skiing, spirit, and girls’ swimming and diving — has had its season modified into a proposed seven-week campaign, with competition ending on March 20, as high schools will then transition to the C sports season.
A meeting between CHSAA, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the governor’s COVID-19 response team will take place in mid-January, where new COVID-19 data will be analyzed and discussed, with plans meant to be further fleshed out for the state’s B sports season. Specific details for each sport, including ice hockey, will be communicated after that meeting.
In the summer, a moratorium was put on all CHSAA sports from Oct. 18 to Jan. 3, 2021 to account for COVID-19 modeling that indicated pandemic conditions were likely to worsen in late fall. When that plan was announced, with sports being split into four seasons, instead of the usual three, it was noted the association's calendar was subject to change based on pandemic-related updates.
