Players, coaches and fans are getting prep hockey back a little sooner than expected this winter.
Practices for teams taking part in the forthcoming Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) ice hockey season can begin on Jan. 18, 2021, according to CHSAA organizers and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
The decision to revise and move up the start of the B sports season was announced Monday, following discussions between CHSAA organizers and state officials to talk timelines and variance approvals, including how many people are to be allowed inside venues with regard to state guidance set as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As part of the B sports season — along with basketball, wrestling, skiing, spirit, and girls’ swimming and diving — ice hockey games will be able to take place as soon as Jan. 25, assuming no further updates are made to the CHSAA calendar. Ice hockey games were previously expected to be played beginning on or around Feb. 1. The move gives teams the opportunity to play an extra week's worth of matchups compared to what CHSAA officials indicated earlier this month.
CHSAA organizers will meet with athletic directors and coaches virtually on Jan. 4 for the first of multiple sessions to discuss further details.
